Serbia lost its first game to the United States, 110-84. Nikola Jokic added 20 points, eight assists, and five rebounds but shot 1-for-6 from downtown. He had some help offensively, as four other players landed in double figures. It’s just that Serbia’s defense struggled to defend a red-hot United States team. The USA shot over 62% from the floor and hit 56.3% from downtown against the Serbs.
Serbia will likely clean up the defense against Puerto Rico, which clearly doesn’t have the weapons that the U.S. has.
On the other hand, Puerto Rico lost to South Sudan, 90-79, in its opening game. Puerto Rico was out-rebounded 55-37 and shot just 38.6% from the floor after going 11-for-31 from downtown. Although Puerto Rico found the foul line more often, they only hit 58.3% from the charity stripe.
Jose Alverado and Tremont Waters lead this team. Both contributed 18+ points and added 44 of Puerto Rico’s 79 points. However, Puerto Rico lacks the depth to compete against Serbia. If South Sudan defeated Puerto Rico by double-digits, prepare for Serbia to win by 20+.
