RBC Heritage: PGA Best Weekend Picks (2024)

The 2024 RBC Heritage is off to a fast start, with six golfers sitting at 10-under-par or lower atop the leaderboard. Tom Hoge, Sepp Straka, Collin Morikawa, and J.T. Poston are all tied for the lead at 11-under-par, followed closely by other notable names, including Ludvig Ã…berg, Patrick Cantaly, Sahith Theegala, and, of course, Scottie Scheffler.

Scheffler’s second win at Augusta National led to a slow opening round at 2-under-par, but the World No. 1 scorched the field on Friday, winding up 6-under-par to surge 16 spots up the leaderboard to occupy tenth place. The past two winners at Harbour Town, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Jordan Spieth, sit at 6-under-par and 5-under-par, respectively.

Without a cut line enforced, golfers could afford a slower start than normal. Now, with the weekend here, the pace should amplify at a course that has already been flooded with birdies and eagles during the first two rounds.

In this article, we’ll break down which golfers to wager in the outright winner market, along with a recommended unit size. Follow me on X @Matt_MacKay_ to get more free plays and PGA Tour best bets throughout the week.

These plays are 0.5ou and 0.75u, or 0.5% and 0.75% of your betting bankroll. An exception is being made for the odds-on favorite, Scottie Scheffler. Odds courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook.

Ludvig Ã…berg (+500)

Coming off of a runner-up finish during his debut at the Masters, Ludvig Åberg has transferred his momentum into another fast start at Harbour Town. Ranked 26th strokes gained on approach, 15th strokes gained off-the-tee, and seventh proximity to hole. There’s few flaws to Åberg’s game right now, which is why oddsmakers have him at +500 in the outright winner market, sitting one off the lead at 10-under-par. Let’s stake a 0.75 unit wager on Åberg to notch his second win on the PGA Tour.

Scottie Scheffler (+600)

Ranked first strokes gained on approach, second off-the-tee, and fifth around the green, Scottie Scheffler showed just how dangerous he can be against the field during Friday’s second round at Harbour Town. Despite a slow 2-under-par start, Scheffler rattled off six birdies and finished the second round bogey-free to launch himself into contention. 6-1 odds is better value than we’ve had on the World No. 1 in quite some time, so it’s a good investment to stake another 0.75 unit wager on Scheffler to earn his fourth win in five events played.

Patrick Cantlay (+1000)

Patrick Cantlay has been at his best during RBC Heritage in past years and it’s no different this time around. The Californian has gone 4-under-par and 5-under-par to sit at 9-under-par, which is currently T8 on the leaderboard alongside Sahith Theegala. Cantlay only has two bogeys entering Saturday’s third round, plus, he’s ranked 36th in driving accuracy and 28th in birdie or better conversion rate. The numbers this season aren’t eye-popping, but Cantlay is clearly in his element at Harbour Town, so a 0.50 unit wager at 10-1 odds to earn his first outright win in two years is sufficient.

Tom Hoge (+1200)

Tom Hoge remains disrespected by oddsmakers at +1200 in the outright winner market, despite gaining the lead and never relinquishing it. Hoge ranks 26th strokes gained putting and second on the PGA Tour in strokes gained on approach. It’s this combination of skills that have made him such a force at Harbour Town’s narrow fairways and small greens. Hoge won the 2022 Pebble Beach Pro-Am, so he’s done it before, but he’ll need to hold off a field that is loaded with talent in this Signature Event. Let’s stake another 0.50 unit wager on Hoge to continue hunting flagsticks with his irons and putter to notch his second career win on the PGA Tour.

Sahith Theegala (+1800)

After nearly missing the cut when it was still enforced in 2022, Sahith Theegala bounced back with a T3 finish in 2023 at the RBC Heritage. Theegala already has four top-ten finishes in 2024 and sealed his first outright win at the 2023 Fortinet Championship. Theegala ranks 13th strokes gained putting, 14th strokes gained off-the-tee, and top-50 for strokes gained on approach. A bogey-free Round 1, followed by five more birdies in Round 2, as Theegala sitting in contention at 9-under-par, which is just two off of the lead. One more half unit wager is warranted to be placed on Theegala ahead of Saturday’s third round.
