Ryan Fox 2023 British Open Odds, Picks & Predictions

It’s homecoming week for Rory McIlroy at the British Open.

Well, not exactly. McIlroy is a native of Northern Ireland and currently resides in Jupiter, Florida. This year's British Open (or "Open Championship," if you're a purist) is being held at Royal Liverpool (aka "Hoylake") in Wirral, England.

But McIlroy hoisted the Claret Jug the last time the Open was held at Royal Liverpool, besting Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia by two shots in 2014, and he returns nine years later as the betting favorite.

Who could have imagined that Rory would go nine years without winning a major? He won both the Open and the PGA Championship in 2014 — his third and fourth major championships. He was only 25 at the time.

Can Rory end the majors drought at a course where he's tasted victory before? It won't be easy, as world No. 1-ranked player Scottie Scheffler, 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm and 2023 PGA champ Brooks Koepka all have designs on the Jug.

Fans of true links golf and the creative shotmaking it requires should be excited about the Open Championship's return to Hoylake. The course will be firm and fast, and we'll see a lot of players landing their approach shots in front of the green and bouncing the ball onto the putting surface.

McIlroy posted a winning score of -17 in 2014. Tiger Woods finished at -18 when he won the Open at Hoylake in 2006. But if the wind howls, we could easily see a winning score in the neighborhood of -7 or -8.

The British Open champion is granted the title of Champion Golfer of the Year. Let's take a closer look at some of the players vying for that honor.

Here is our betting outlook and picks for Ryan Fox.

Ryan Fox 2023 British Open Betting Stats to Know

  • Best odds to win: +10000 (Bet MGM/PointsBet)
  • World ranking: 43
  • Best British Open finish: T16 (2019)
  • Last four British Open finishes: CUT, T67, T16, T39
  • Last four tournament finishes: T12, T43, T30, T21

Ryan Fox 2023 British Open Betting Outlook

Fox has been remarkably consistent in recent months, missing only one cut since the start of March and finishing top 30 in eight of his last 10 PGA Tour events (not counting a withdrawal at the RBC Heritage). But Fox hasn’t recorded a top-10 finish all year, and that includes the four DP World Tour events he played early in the calendar year. Nor has he made much noise in past Open Championships, with his T16 at Royal Portrush in 2019 his only noteworthy finish. There’s not much to suggest that a wager on the New Zealander to win outright would be a savvy investment.

Ryan Fox 2023 British Open Betting Advice

Fox is a grinder who consistently makes cuts, but he hasn’t seriously contended in any event this season. It makes little sense to bet Fox to win outright, or to finish top 5 or top 10. But there’s value to betting Fox to finish top 40 (-105 on DraftKings).
