Saint Maryâs vs. VCU
Leg 1 - Jamir Watkins 15+ Points (+425)
While Adrian Baldwin Jr. led the Rams against the Flyers in the A1o Tournament Championship game last week with 16 points and seven assists, Jamir Watkins provided 13 points and 8 rebounds, and for me, that was the real difference in that game. In the semi-final game, the sophomore forward scored 15 points, and I think they rely on him big time in this spot against the Gaels.
Leg 2 - Logan Johnson Over 15.5 Points (-115)
In their WCC Conference Championship game vs. Gongza, Gaels senior guard Logan Johnson scored a game-high 20 points, but they only managed a 33.3 percent field goal percentage (18 of 54), received only seven points from the bench, and finished with more turnovers (11) than assists (eight) in the 51-77 loss.
The 20-point performance from Johnson was nothing out of the norm, however, as he has now scored at least 20 points in for of his past five games, including all three to end the regular season. Arguably the Gaelsâ best scoring threat, I like for Johnson to find his rhythm in this one.
Leg 3 - VCU (+150)
VCU appeared to be in a position to compete on the biggest stage in college basketball when the Rams won nine of their final 12 games of the 2020-21 campaign. That is until the pandemicâs aftereffects prevented VCU from likely winning an NCAA Tournament game for the first time since 2016.
Positive COVID tests required the Rams to forfeit their match against Oregon that year, but VCU now has the opportunity to atone when it takes on Saint Maryâs in the West Region on Friday in Albany, New York.
The 12th-seeded Rams (27-7) appear to have taken inspiration from the club that was unable to demonstrate its potential in mid-March because they have likewise found their groove in the last weeks of the campaign. VCU has won nine games in a row, most recently defeating Dayton 68-56 to win the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament on Sunday.
The fifth-seeded Gaels (26-7), who have had the fewest defeats since the 2017-18 season, are now the focus of VCUâs attention. Despite winning five of its past seven games, Saint Maryâs is still recovering from the whooping Gonzaga gave them on March 7th, and I wonder about a once-confident teamâs psyche heading into his one.
