MLB Best Bets

Seattle Mariners (+190) vs. Toronto Blue Jays (-230) | O/U 9.0 (-102/-120)

It’s been a rough start to the season for the Mariners, who have now lost four of their last five games. They dropped last night’s series opener 3-2 to the Blue Jays. The two American League sides are back at it today at 3:07 p.m. ET from Rogers Centre in Toronto, ON.

This pitching matchup features a duel between Chris Flexen for the M’s and Kevin Gausman for the Jays. Flexen has been awful to start the year, coming in at 0-4 with an 8.86 ERA and 1.97 WHIP. As for Gausman, he’s been a serviceable option at 2-2 with a 2.84 ERA and 1.01 WHIP.

All things considered, I’m locking in the over in this spot. Toronto’s current roster is slashing .277/.347/.569 with five home runs and two doubles over 65 at-bats against Flexen. On the flip side, Seattle has great numbers against Gausman. Their slash line is .290/.388/.420 over 69 at-bats. Let’s sit back and root for offense in this one – give me the over!

Bet: Over 9.0 Runs (-102)

NBA Playoffs Best Bets

Phoenix Suns (+120) at Denver Nuggets (-140) | O/U 226.5 (-110/-110)

The Western Conference Semi’s tip-off this Saturday night, as the top-seeded Nuggets play host to the Conference favorites, the Suns. This is certainly an intriguing matchup, as Phoenix has had playoff success vs. Denver in the past, but these same Suns somehow underwhelmed in their 4-1 series victory over the Clippers. Phoenix’s lack of depth was glaring in the first round, and their reliance on the mid-range is worrisome for their title prospects. Conversely, the Nuggets looked great for the majority of their series vs. the Wolves, a foe much more formidable than a Clippers squad absent both Kawhi Leonard and Paul George.

From the outside looking in, this is very much Denver’s series to lose. Home-court advantage should be crucial for the Nuggets, as they were one of the best in the NBA at home by nearly every metric. Despite this and Denver’s status as the top-seed in the West, the Nuggets still find themselves as short dogs in the series (+110 on DraftKings Sportsbook). This is a result of the public’s infatuation with the Suns since their acquisition of Kevin Durant, with a blind eye being glazed over Phoenix’s weaknesses. At the very least, this is a 50/50 series, and the betting public’s obsession with the Suns has led to the Nuggets being underpriced not only for the series but in this game.

The Suns are a popular bet to win it all, but their depth is worrisome, and this line is compensating too heavily for the team’s potential. Denver has a strong reputation on their home court and was the better team in the first round of the playoffs. We’ll take the value where we can find it, and the Nuggets should be favored by more than three points in Game 1.

Bet: Nuggets -3 (-110)

NHL Playoffs Best Bets

Toronto Maple Leafs (-105) at Tampa Bay Lightning (-113) | O/U 6.5 (-110/-110)

The Maple Leafs had their first elimination game of this series, and they could not get it done as the Lightning are now 2-1 in Toronto.

If you don’t believe in ghosts, this might change your opinion.  The spirits of playoff past are being relived as Thursday’s loss was the Leafs’ tenth consecutive defeat in a possible elimination game. They need their superstars to step up. Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, Williams Nylander, and Morgan Reilly now have a combined -11 plus/minus in elimination games.

Vasilevsky has struggled throughout this series, but as decorated champions do, he stepped up and saved 28 of 30. That defense depends on him because he’s had a below-average blue line all season.

In this series, neither Vasilevsky nor Ilya Samsonov has been as good as they were in the regular season. The over missed on the hook in the last game, but we will see an offensive-heavy game like the series has been.

Pick: Over 6.5 (-110)

-John Supowitz
