Seton Hall Pirates Preview

Seton Hall might be one of the least talked about tournament teams in the nation. The Pirates have been overshadowed in the Big East and have not had any flashy wins. They finished the season 6-1 after dealing with injuries and COVID-19 issues all season.

Jared Rhoden and Kadary Richmond are Seton Hall's go-to guys with Bryce Aiken expected to miss the tournament. Seton Hall doesn't shoot especially well, but they do reach the charity stripe at a relatively high rate. Kevin Willard is a defensive-minded coach who has lead this squad to victories over Texas, UConn, and Michigan.

The loss of Aiken is obviously huge, but based on second-half play, it appears that the Pirates have adjusted to life without him and redefined their identity. Since Feb. 1, Seton Hall has lost only three times – all away from home against top-25 teams. I don't know how high the Pirates’ ceiling is, but they have performed well of late, making me confident in their ability to reach the second weekend.

TCU Horned Frogs Preview

If this is going to be the tournament of the middle seeds, TCU is a top candidate to lead that charge. Despite a 20-12 record, do not underestimate these Horned Frogs. If this team were in the ACC, they probably would have been the second-best team in the conference.

Their ninth-ranked strength of schedule has prepared them for the tournament, and they tallied some top-tier wins this season. With victories over Texas Tech, Kansas, Texas and LSU, they have shown their ability to play 40 minutes without falling apart.

TCU is led by a top-25 defense, throwing teams off their game and limitting shots beyond the arc. Their offense prefers to find shots down low, and despite not having the most efficienct offense, they do rebound at a high clip. Considering that they've faced some prolific rebounding teams, their third-ranked offensive rebounding percentage is impressive.TCU recorded 1.05 points per possession against Texas Tech – the best defense in the nation – so I am not too worried about the Horned Frogs’ offense.

Mike Miles is a facilitating guard who helps Chuck O'Bannon and Damion Baugh excel. TCU has already faced the best of the best. This team shows promise and has the potential to make a run in the tournament.

Rapid Prediction for Seton Hall Pirates vs. TCU Horned Frogs

The Big 12 Conference offers plenty of opportunities for big wins throughout the season, and the TCU Horned Frogs took enough advantage of those opportunities to earn an at-large NCAA Tournament berth. Despite just an 8-10 conference record, TCU owns wins over several tournament teams (Kansas, Texas Tech, Iowa State), and even earned an impressive non-conference victory over LSU. Seton Hall won six consecutive games before its loss in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals, but just one of those six wins came against a team in the top half of its league. The Pirates are vulnerable on the backboards, which is where TCU thrives as one of the nation's best offensive rebounding teams. And Seton Hall's offense is not as explosive without Bryce Aiken, who has not played since January 15th.
