Skinner Scratched: 2023 Kentucky Derby Field Down to 19 Horses

Over the last 24 hours, we learned that Practical Move, Lord Miles, and Continuar had been scratched from the 2023 Kentucky Derby. They’re being replaced by Cyclone Mischief, Mandarin Hero and King Russell. On Friday, Skinner became the latest horse to be scratched from the 149th Run for the Roses. This time, there are no replacement horses, so the race will proceed with just 19 horses.

Skinner Becomes Fourth Horse to be Scratched from 2023 Kentucky Derby

The 149th Kentucky Derby has experienced a significant change in its lineup as Skinner, a California-based colt, became the fourth horse to be scratched from the race. Trainer John Shirreffs announced on Friday that Skinner was suffering from an elevated temperature, reducing the Derby’s field to 19 horses. This is the first time since 2015 that four horses have been scratched from the Derby.

Skinner, a bay colt trained by John Shirreffs, had initially been part of the 2023 Kentucky Derby probable field after Wild On Ice’s team withdrew due to injury. The colt had a promising racing profile, with an improving speed figure in recent races. Owned by C R K Stable LLC, Skinner had accumulated career earnings of $216,300 and 45 Derby qualifying points.

The 2023 Kentucky Derby is scheduled for May 6, 6:57 p.m. ET. With Skinner’s withdrawal, the remaining 19 horses in the field will compete for the prestigious title in the first leg of the U.S. thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown.
