The Volunteers will open up SEC play this weekend as they head to Gainesville to take on the 2-1 Gators. After putting up a valiant effort last week vs. Alabama, the Gators return home looking to get back on track and beat up on a team they’ve had a track record of doing so against.

Let's take a closer look.

Overview

Like many who have faced the Crimson Tide over the past decade the gators came close last weekend, but no cigar. Trailing by just five entering the fourth quarter, the Gators pulled within a two-point conversion of tying the game with 3 minutes remaining but failed two-point conversion and never saw the ball again.

Dominating on the ground, the Gators continue to lean on running back Malik Davis, and the dual-threat ability of QB Emory Jones. Lurking in his shadow however is freshman Anthony Richardson who is dealing with a hamstring injury, or otherwise may have got the green light to lace them up last week.

For the Volunteers, the more things change the more they stay the same as “the best team they’ve had in xx years” once again has stumbled out of the gates losing at home to Pitt. Pitt’s subsequent loss to Western Michigan has made the loss even worse, as the Vols now begin SEC play and a daunting schedule that includes Georgia and Alabama.

Uncertainty looms at the quarterback position for the Vols as well, as incumbent starter Joe Milton deals with a leg injury. Virginia Tech transfer Hendon Hooker got the start last week in his replacement as the team beat up on Tennesee Tech 56-0.

Trends

  • The Over is 6-0 in Gators L6 vs. teams with winning records
  • Volunteers 0-4 in L4 following games where they allowed less than 20 points

Bottom Line

A common betting angle is to fade the team who just played Alabama, given the physicality and mental energy that the game requires on their opponent. So far this week, the market seems to be following as the Gators have dropped almost three points entering the week at -20.

In this one, however, I’m on the under. The Gators not only kept up with the Crimson Tide on that side of the ball but bested them in key areas across the defense and showed they can compete with the very best. Additionally, with question marks for both teams at quarterback, I like for both to rely on the run and for this clock to be ticking early and often as we grind out this now inflated number.

Pick: UNDER 63
