The CJ Cup Championship PGA Tour Odds, Picks & Predictions (2022)

The PGA Tour will head to South Carolina this week, as the Congaree Golf Club will be the fourth course in five years to host the CJ Cup. Located about 35 miles from Savannah, GA, this course was designed after sandbelt courses in Australia and is one of the more unique these players will see all season.

Like we saw last week at the ZOZO, this event will feature a 78-player field and no cut. Let’s take a closer look at the course, and who might take the top spot in a field that features 15 of the world’s top 20 players.

Previous Winners of the CJ Cup

  • 2021: Rory McIlroy
  • 2020: Jason Kokrak
  • 2019: Justin Thomas

Course Preview: Congaree Golf Club

Host of the Palmetto Championship in 2021, we do have some course history to draw on here, despite the course being only five years old. Designed by Tom Fazio, Congaree Golf Club was built entirely on sand, creating some of the fastest conditions of any course these guys will see this year.

With no “traditional” rough, shots off of the fairway will find themselves in sandy areas and marshes, making this one of the more unique courses in rotation on the PGA Tour. With plenty of hazards to go around, scrambling will be key for success here. It’s also worth noting that coming in at 7,685 yards, Congaree is well above the PGA Tour average in length.

Outright Betting Pick

Matthew Fitzpatrick (+1800 on DraftKings Sportsbook

Though we haven’t seen him on Tour yet this season, the 2022 US Open winner has remained busy since it wrapped in August, competing four times on the DP World Tour. Losing in a playoff in Italy, the major champion has continued to play well since wrapping up the previous season at #10 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

With just one event held here at Congaree in the past, Fitzpatrick comes in #2 in the field in true strokes gained (+1.73), improving in each round last year and finishing with a Sunday 66 (T10). One of the most complete players in the world, Fitzpatrick is known for his creative shots which should suit him well here in the abnormal setting of Congaree.

Add in he’s gained strokes with his putter in seven of his last nine events, I like for the young Englishman to be in the mix come Sunday in South Carolina.
