NFL Preseason Best Bets

Steelers vs. Falcons

The Steelers have looked great on the offensive side, scoring 27 points in each preseason game. The starters have seen some action in each game, and we should expect that again in the final dress rehearsal. The Falcons have to love some things from their last preseason game. Bijan Robinson has had some excellent runs, Drake London is making athletic plays, and Kyle Pitts looks healthy. This is a team that, if the pieces can click, could be a dark horse in the NFC. For a preseason game, I don’t trust the more-than-field goal spread when we’re not sure how much playing time everyone will have, but I have seen enough from both teams to believe they can hit the over.

Pick: Over 38 (-108)

MLB Best Bets

Boston Red Sox (+110) at Houston Astros (-130) | O/U 9 (-110/-110)

After struggling last year in his rookie season, Brayan Bello has come into his own and has been a constant presence in a Boston rotation impacted by injuries. The reason for this turnaround has been the increased movement in his sinker and changeup, as well as the fact he’s cut his walk rate from 10.1 last year to 6.2 in 2023.

The Astros seem just to know how to develop pitchers, and you can add J.P. France to that list. Not a blow-you-away type of pitcher, but he has great movement and keeps the ball down to induce the roundball at a 43% rate. He’s incredible at the moment, with just a 1.69 ERA in six appearances (five starts.)

This has been a high-scoring series so far, but I like this pitching matchup, and I think nine runs is a high total.

Pick: Under 9 (-110)

WNBA Best Bets

Seattle Storm vs. Indiana Fever

The Seattle Storm and Indiana Fever have combined for just 19 wins this season. Neither of these teams will make the playoffs. But this will be the rubber match of a three-game regular season series.

The Fever defeated the Storm on the road, 80-68, earlier this summer. Meanwhile, the Storm added an 85-62 win over the Fever in Indiana in their most recent game.

Seattle has won three of its last five games. The Storm were crushed by the Chicago Sky, 102-79, in their previous matchup. Seattle got consistent production out of Jewel Loyd, but no other player scored more than 13 points in that loss.

On the other hand, Indiana just defeated the Phoenix Mercury in its last game. Kelsey Mitchell added 28 points on 10-for-22 from the field and  5-for-10 from deep. Indiana’s starting lineup typically gives more offensive production. They’ve shot over 44 percent from the field, while the Storm have only shot 40.6 percent this season.

In that last matchup against the Storm, the Fever shot 37 percent from the field and added only four threes in the entire game. On the other hand, the Storm shot uncharacteristically from the field, hitting over 53 percent of shots.

The Fever will take advantage of turnovers better and should add more points in the paint. I’ll back Indiana in this game.

Bet: Fever -2.5 (-110)
