Top 3 MLB Betting Picks for Sunday, September 12 (2021)

Welcome back for another Sunday, friends. Today is the opening Sunday for NFL football, but we still have baseball games being played for a few more weeks. Today’s slate features a couple of pitching mismatches I’d like to target for some potential lopsided outcomes and a pitchers’ duel that looks like a good under play. Let’s get to it.

Here are my top betting plays for Sunday, September 12. Have questions or want to talk baseball or betting? Feel free to reach out on Twitter @mikeMaher.

These days, it’s hard to see J.A. Happ on the slate and not bet against him. But that wasn’t the initial thinking here. That just happened to be an added bonus while researching the bet. For the Reds, Sonny Gray posted a 2.93 ERA in August and has a 3.60 ERA through 10 innings in September. Happ has a 6.24 ERA and has allowed 11 earned runs through his first six innings in September. Both teams are scratching and clawing for a playoff appearance here, but the “Happ Factor” is coming into play for the Cardinals. If you want to take a bigger swing, I’d even consider giving the runs here and moving this one from -133 to +120 on BetMGM.

I couldn’t do -250 for this one, but I am comfortable giving up the 1.5 runs to move this one to -120. The Marlins are going to reportedly stick with Edward Cabrera in the starting rotation as they continue to attempt to develop him. He already has seven walks and 10 earned runs to go with 12 2/3 innings. The Braves are countering with Max Fried, who has pitched to a fantastic 1.97 ERA through 64 innings in the second half. And while the Braves are surging and have a deep lineup centered around MVP candidate Freddie Freeman, the Marlins are fading and just lost Jesus Aguilar from the middle of their lineup.

Max Scherzer vs. Blake Snell. Since being traded to the Dodgers at the MLB trade deadline, Scherzer has a 1.05 ERA and 63 strikeouts through 43 innings. Despite a rough start to the season, Snell has a 3.28 ERA in the second half, a 2.57 ERA in September, and posted a 1.72 ERA in August.  Despite this pitching matchup, the line has only moved down to 7.5 runs. Both pitchers have the potential for shutdown outings on Sunday, boosting the potential for the under. You can get this 7.5 under for -110 at FOX Bet, which currently boasts the best odds.
