Tuesday's MLB Best Bets
(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)
Kansas City Royals (+140) at Baltimore Orioles (-166) | O/U 9 (-105/-115)
The American East champions are back in form; the offense that finished tenth last year in slugging percentage is currently eighth and is sixth in runs. Cole Irvin will get the start, and last year, he split time getting spot starts and the bullpen and was recalled and optioned multiple times. He will be able to minimize walks and get hitters to chase with his changeup and cutter.
The Royals have only three fewer hits than Baltimore and two more home runs, but the bulk of that production came from an 11-0 win against the Twins. This team is still projected to finish near the bottom of the AL Central. Alec Marsh will try to shake off an awful rookie season in which he finished with a 5.69 ERA and a -0.2 WAR.
Marsh's whiff rate was in the 74th percentile, which could help him against the O's that were 13th in 2023. With the pitching matchup, you understand the run total, but it's a little high, and you should look for the Under
Pick: Under 9 Total Runs (-115)
Colorado Rockies (+164) at Chicago Cubs (-196) | O/U 7 (-110/-110)
The AL West is filled with competitive teams, but the Rockies aren't one of them. Their offensive numbers are heavily skewed thanks to the home effect; they finished 18th in runs scored per game overall but were 29th in runs scored on the road. They'll have Kyle Freehand going, and the Colorado air didn't affect him because he was worse on the road last year, going 2-9 with a 5.13 ERA.
It was all Cubs in the first game of this series by grabbing the 5-0 win. They needed this after what was a brutal weekend, dropping two of three to the champs. Javier Assad gets the ball, and although he's listed as a relief pitcher, last year, with injuries to the rotation, it saw him in that role, and he was phenomenal, going 3-1 with a 2.84 ERA in nine starts.
Freeland's numbers aren't good against the Cubs lineup, and their top hitters Cody Bellinger, Dansby Swanson, and Ian Happ have a good history against him.
Pick: Cubs -1.5 (+114)
New York Yankees (-105) at Arizona Diamondbacks (-115) | O/U 9 (-108/-112)
The Yankees continue to roll as they are the only team that's 5-0 on the year. Unlike the series in Houston, New York controlled the first game of the series from the beginning, and they've done so well getting timely hits and hitting with runners in scoring position. Nestor Cortez Jr. gets the ball, and his Opening Day start wasn't memorable. He allowed four and walked two in five innings.
The Diamondbacks were easily able to handle a bad Colorado team, but seeing that upgrade in competition caught them by surprise in the first game of this series. Today, they'll have their ace Zac Gallen, and he had a great first start this season, allowing three earned in five innings to get the win.
Although their sample sizes are small, each pitcher has success against these lineups, with both hitting under .200. In this stadium that's one of the most friendly to pitchers and two talented bullpens, this should be a low-scoring game.
Pick: Under 9 Total Runs (-112)
