Toronto Raptors at San Antonio Spurs

The Spurs raised a lot of eyebrows this week when they managed to beat the Suns twice on Tuesday and Thursday night. First-overall pick Victor Wembanyama went off in the Thursday blowout with a career-high 38 points. Wembanyama has been great to start his rookie campaign but the perception behind the Spurs’ last two games is probably playing a role in this line.

Who knows how long this season that Toronto will keep this roster together, but so long as they are, it’s still a solid team. They’ve gotten off to a slow start at 2-4, 3-3 ATS, but they’ve already played a strong Philadelphia team twice and lost close games to Chicago and Portland.

San Antonio is a young team and still sits near the bottom of the league in adjusted defensive rating. They’re second to last in eFG% allowed at 59.3%, which should allow an otherwise average Toronto offense to flourish. Meanwhile, Toronto leads the league in defensive eFG%. It’s a strong defense against a weak defense and I’m going to fade the red-hot Spurs, taking the Raptors.

Pick: Raptors -3 (-110)

Charlotte Hornets at Dallas Mavericks

The Kyrie Irving era in Dallas is finally getting off the ground after things were rough at the end of last season. The Mavericks have started 4-1 while scoring 120.8 points per game. They’ll go up against a Charlotte team that ranks 20th in adjusted defensive rating.

The Hornets are playing at the second-fastest pace in the league. However, they’ll go up against a Mavericks team that plays one of the slowest offensive paces in the league. Luka Doncic and Kyrie are both comfortable running things slowly on offense and they should be able to dictate the pace against a Charlotte defense that isn’t as bad as it was last year.

The Mavericks will get their points, but fewer possessions in this game will make it difficult to reach this total. Both offenses will need to be efficient in order to go over this large number. I’m going to go the other way and back the under.

Pick: Under 236 (-110)

Memphis Grizzlies at Portland Trail Blazers

It’s been a nightmare start for the Grizzlies this season while Ja Morant serves his suspension. Memphis is 0-6 SU and 1-5 ATS. On Friday night, Memphis lost a heartbreaker in overtime to this same Portland team.

The main reason Memphis is struggling is because their offense has sputtered without Morant. They’re 25th in adjusted offensive rating and sit near the bottom of the league in eFG%. This reared its ugly head on Friday when Memphis led by 10 with 3:21 left but eventually blew the lead and sent the game to overtime.

Memphis is too good even without Morant to keep losing these games. They have an above-average defense and are playing a second straight game against a Portland team whose record is not indicative of the type of team they are on either side of the ball. I love Memphis to finally get into the win column on Sunday and pull out the cover.

Pick: Grizzlies -2.5 (-110)
