The NHL season is underway! Let's highlight a few key games for today.
Monday's NHL Best Bets
Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook
Tampa Bay Lightning (+130) vs. Toronto Maple Leafs (-155) | O/U 6.5 (-130/+110)
The Lightning have an outstanding offense, which has helped this season. They're currently seventh in goals scored per game at 3.64, although at full strength, they have just a 45.87% expected goal percentage, they're been crushing it on special teams with 11 power play goals. They're missing their star goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy, but Jonas Johansson has done well with a .916 save percentage and is 5-1-3.
The Leafs are coming in with just two points in their last four games. However, the offense is getting better with Auston Matthews coming off his second hat trick of the season and William Nylander, Mitch Marner, and John Tavares all being productive. Their problem is they're not getting efficiency from their goaltending. Joseph Woll has allowed nine goals in his last two games, and Ilya Samsonov has a .876 save percentage.
The over could be a great play, but if you want the big one, take the Lightning. The Bolts are getting production throughout their lines, and goaltending has been more consistent.
Pick: Lightning Moneyline (+130)
Boston Bruins (+110) vs. Dallas Stars (-130) | O/U 5.5 (-112/-108)
The Bruins will be without Charlie McAvoy again, but they're still strong throughout their lines and are sixth in expected goals. They also have one of the better goaltending tandems, and it looks like Jeremy Swayman will be between the pipes for this game. Swayman has not lost in five starts, and his 7.7 goals saved above expected are third.
They'll meet the Stars, who are also one of the more complete teams in the league. Dallas is slightly lower in expected goals at 11th, but they also have the talent in the net. Jake Oettinger has allowed 1.97 goals per game and has 6.6 goals saved above expected.
Still, those numbers are not better than Swaymanâs. The Stars aren't large favorites, but it's tough to go against Swayman at this moment.
Pick: Bruins Moneyline (+110)
Edmonton Oilers (-118) vs. Vancouver Canucks (-102) | O/U 7 (+105/-125)
With their lineup of forwards, the Oilers should be on another run to the playoffs, but it doesn't look like it at the moment. They're 23rd in goals scored per game, and yes, they were without Connor McDavid for some time, but they still dropped the last two games with him in the lineup. The goaltending problem needs to be addressed because Stuart Skinner and Jack Campbell have been awful, as they're last in save percentage and 30th in goals allowed per game.
Vancouver does not have either of these problems at the moment as they're top two in goals scored and goals allowed. Elias Peterson has been incredible, averaging nearly two points per game. Thatcher Demko has been holding it down between the pipes as his 11.4 goals saved above expected leads the league.
The Oilers are coming in as road favorites, and with how each team is playing, that's surprising. Edmonton could put up the points, but you can't trust the defense against a team scoring nearly five points per game.
Pick: Canucks Moneyline (-102)
