Top NHL Odds, Picks & Predictions: Tuesday (10/24)

It’s a big day in the NHL as all 32 teams are set to hit the ice tonight. ESPN is taking note, and they’ll debut their “Frozen Frenzy” concept, which will mirror the NFL’s Red Zone. Whether you want to zoom around the league or lock in on a single game, I’ve got you covered from a betting perspective. Let’s dive into my top three bets for the NHL action tonight!

NHL Betting Record 2023-2024: 4-7 (-3.60 units)

Toronto Maple Leafs (-170) vs. Washington Capitals (+143) | 6.5 (-120/+100)

The Maple Leafs are off to a pedestrian start this season, going 3-2-0 out of the gate. But, they’re not sounding the alarms nearly as loud as they are in the nation’s capital, as the Caps are just 1-2-1 far. This Eastern Conference tilt is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET from Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.

There’s simply no way that I can back the Capitals in any capacity right now. They’ve been shaky on both ends of the ice, getting out-scored by a combined 15-6 over the four-game sample. The offense is arguably the worst in the NHL right now, and they’ve still yet to score on the power play (0/13).

While Toronto is far from the gold standard in defensive ability, they’ve been fantastic this season when Joseph Woll is minding the net. The 25-year-old is confirmed to start tonight, and he has posted a 1.69 GAA (7th) and .949 SV% (5th) this season. I think we can expect him to turn in another solid outing against a struggling Washington side. On the flip side, do we even need to touch on Toronto’s offense? They’re humming this year, scoring at a 29.4% rate on the power play (sixth) while posting the second-highest expected goals per 60 minutes rate at 4.27. It’s worth a shot on the plus-money payout that comes with the Leafs on the puck line here.

Bet: Toronto Maple Leafs -1.5 (+143)

Buffalo Sabres (+135) vs. Ottawa Senators (-160) | 7.0 (+100/-120)

There was a lot of buzz surrounding both the Sabres and Senators entering this year, and the two sides will square off in Canada’s capital city tonight. This Atlantic Division battle is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. ET from the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, ON.

The Sabres enter this game on the second night of a back-to-back, but with it being so early in the season, I think everyone’s legs are fresh enough for it not to have a huge impact. Considering these two squads are pretty evenly matched, I’m going to take a shot with Buffalo as a sizable underdog.

The Sens have the better record, and they’re better in most statistical categories thus far, but their strength of schedule is pretty weak. Their wins have come against the Flyers, the Vasilevskiy-less Lightning, and the Capitals. Meanwhile, they’ve dropped contests to the Hurricanes and Red Wings. This will be a step up for Ottawa, and it’s only a matter of time before Buffalo starts clicking offensively. Ultimately, this game feels more like a coin flip to me, so I’ll ride with the underdog in Buffalo.

Bet: Buffalo Sabres Moneyline (+135)

Vancouver Canucks (+100) vs. Nashville Predators (-120) | 6.5 (-110/-110)

The Predators are 3-3-0 out of the gate, and they enter tonight’s contest as slight favorites against the visiting Canucks (3-2-0). This Western Conference showdown is slated for 9:15 p.m. ET from Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN.

I’m laying the short juice that comes with the Preds tonight. They’ve been one of the best offenses in the league so far as they sit with the third-highest expected goals per 60 minutes rate of 4.00. The power play has been solid considering they’re cashing in on 23.1% of their man-advantage opportunities (12th). This will be a favorable matchup against a Vancouver side that’s at 75.0% this year (19th) in terms of their penalty kill. They’re coming off of a historically bad season on the PK, where they were dead last at just 71.6%.

Ultimately, Nashville is the more physical, experienced team in this matchup. They’ll also have a goaltending edge with Juuse Saros (unconfirmed) in the crease. I think the Predators are right to be favored, and I anticipate them taking care of business on home ice tonight.

Bet: Nashville Predators Moneyline (-120)
