Tour de France 2023 Betting Preview: Odds, Picks & Predictions

When it comes to the Tour de France, the appeal is serious to those who follow cycling closely. For those who don’t, it is an arduous competition filled with plenty of drama, intrigue, and the potential to cash in. The race begins on July 1st and takes us from Bilbao, Spain, to Paris on July 23rd. There are 21 stages and two rest days built into this competition. There are two true titans of the sport to watch out for at the 110th edition of this race, and I have also identified a couple of sleepers who I think could give them a run for their money at very long odds.

1. Jonas Vingegaard (+105)

When it comes to sports betting, the combination of skill and experience plays a huge factor in a strong play. Vingegaard comes into this race having won the 109th edition and finished first in three of the four competitions he has competed in 2023. He also finished second at the Tour in 2022. For these reasons, I think he is an extremely strong candidate to repeat here, and I also think he is much fresher than his top competitor, and he has prevailed head-to-head again this season. Look for him to have a strong start and set himself up for a successful Tour.

2. Tadej Pogacar (+130)

This truly is a two-horse race on the odds board and for good reason. Pogacar won the Tour de France in 2020 and 2021 and was the runner-up in the race last year, falling to Vingegaard. If you like a tale of resilience and revenge, Tadej is the cyclist to back, as he has the track record to think that he can overcome recent defeats at the hands of Vingegaard, but in the same breath, he hasn’t beaten him recently. Look for Pogacar to always know where his top competitor is on the leaderboard and for him to be ready to do whatever he needs to get back on top of the cycling world.

Sleeper 1: Romain Bardet (+6500)

Aside from the two big guns, I really think that this French cyclist is a dark horse to overcome the big dogs. His style is riding smoothly and staying within himself to achieve good results. But is he ready to break through? He had an impressive start last year, holding the fourth spot in the rankings for the Tour, and he had an extremely rare off-day which threw his Tour chances through a loop. I expect him to be ready for the sun and motivated to finish on top in his home country. He has finished second (2016) and third (2017) in Tours, so I think he could be poised to get over the hump after some time away from the top.

Sleeper 2: Mikel Landa (+5000)

With a couple of fourth place Tour finishes under his belt, he knows what it takes to be competitive in this race, and his recent form has me extremely excited about what he is capable of. He hasn’t broken through to the top of the podium, but he has been very close. Now he is poised to be in much better shape, stating that he hasn’t been in his best shape lately, and I think that could be enough for this to be his career-defining moment.
