Houston Texans Carolina Panthers

This is the battle of the top two 2023 NFL draft picks. Bryce Young, who went first overall, will face off against the second-overall pick C.J. Stroud. Leading up to the draft, there were several reports that the Carolina Panthers coaching staff wanted to select Stroud at No. 1 and may have been overruled by management and forced to select Young out of Alabama with the top pick.

No matter what happened pre-draft, Young went to Carolina and Stroud to Houston. Through seven weeks, Stroud and the Texans are 3-3 with wins against the Jaguars, Steelers and Saints, while Bryce Young and the Panthers have yet to get their first win and sit at an 0-6 record. I can see a lot of narratives for the next decade around these draft selections going either way, with both quarterbacks having chips on their shoulders about who went No. 1 and whether that was deserved.

Only giving three points to the Texans seems light based on both teams’ play through the first seven weeks. I like the Texans plus the points on the road.

Bet: Texans -3.0 (-102)

Arizona Diamondbacks @ Philadelphia Phillies

The rookie Brandon Pfaadt gets the task of trying to lead the Diamondbacks to their first World Series appearance in over 20 years. After a rough first start in the Wild Card round against the Brewers, he’s been great in the last two, going 10 scoreless innings against the Dodgers and Phillies.

For the Phillies, Ranger Suarez has been incredible. He hasn’t gone longer than five innings, but he’s allowed one earned in three total starts and has not stressed an offense that has shined throughout the postseason.

The last time in this matchup, we saw a duel to the very end when the Diamondbacks walked it off in the ninth. That was in Arizona, one of the most pitcher-friendly ballparks this year. Citizens Bank is the opposite. Will we see the road team win two straight in both series? It’s hard to tell, but like most of the games in Philadelphia, it will be high-scoring.

Pick: Over 8.5 (-105)

NBA Best Bets

(Odds courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook)

Los Angeles Lakers @ Denver Nuggets

  • Leg 1: Jamal Murray Over 2.5 Three-Pointers (-160)
  • Leg 2: Christian Wood Over 4.5 Rebounds (-115)
  • Leg 3: D’Angelo Russell Under 12.5 Points (+135)

Jamal Murray dominated the Lakers during the playoffs last season. That included shooting the ball from deep. Murray will continue that dominance into a new season. The beginning of the NBA calendar is all about picking players with the potential to have betting value. One of those players is Murray.

Christian Wood averaged 7.3 rebounds in a limited role with the Dallas Mavericks last season. Wood will benefit from the change of scenery. That will increase the number of rebounds that he is getting per game. He will rotate onto the court while Nikola Jokic is resting. That will help him get more boards tonight.

Consistency has been an issue with D’Angelo Russell since the beginning of his career. The Nuggets are a great defensive team, and that will limit Russell’s shot opportunities. This leg is the riskier leg of this parlay but gives it plenty of betting value for a high-risk, high-reward bet.

      Parlay Odds: +600

      Buffalo Sabres @ Ottawa Senators

There was a lot of buzz surrounding both the Sabres and Senators entering this year, and the two sides will square off in Canada’s capital city tonight. This Atlantic Division battle is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. ET from the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, Ontario.

The Sabres enter this game on the second night of a back-to-back, but with it being so early in the season, I think everyone’s legs are fresh enough for it not to have a huge impact. Considering these two squads are pretty evenly matched, I will take a shot with Buffalo as a sizable underdog.

The Sens have the better record, and they’re better in most statistical categories thus far, but their strength of schedule is pretty weak. Their wins have come against the Flyers, the Andrei Vasilevskiy-less Lightning and the Capitals. Meanwhile, they’ve dropped contests to the Hurricanes and Red Wings. This will be a step up for Ottawa, and it’s only a matter of time before Buffalo starts clicking offensively. Ultimately, this game feels more like a coin flip to me, so I’ll ride with the underdog in Buffalo at plus money.

      Bet: Sabres Moneyline (+135)
