NFL Best Bets

Detroit Lions @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-120)

The Detroit Lions scored 42 points this week against the Carolina Panthers without Amon-Ra St. Brown in the lineup. The team has looked strong all season but is coming off back-to-back weeks with double-digit wins in games that were never really in question.

The Buccaneers have been a bit of a surprise this year. Their 3-1 record through the first four weeks has them projected to blow by their 7.5-win total coming into the season. So far, those three wins have come against the Vikings, Bears and Saints, who have a combined record of 5-10. The Buccaneers’ one loss was a 25-11 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. It seems like the Lions are the more trustworthy team, and only being three-point favorites feels low. I like the Lions to cover in Tampa Bay, even with the Buccaneers coming off of a Week 5 bye.

Bet: Lions -3.0 (-115)

Houston Astros @ Minnesota Twins

Sonny Gray was once again the Twins’ top pitcher, leading the team in ERA and hits per nine innings. He ended the season strong with a 1.54 ERA and batters having a .594 OPS in his last seven starts. He saw the Astros twice, and the Twins won both, with Gray going 13 innings, allowing four earned and striking out 16.

Cristian Javier had a fantastic 2022 with a career-high 11 wins and a 2.54 ERA. He then transitioned that into the playoffs, going 2-0 with a 0.71 ERA in three starts. 2023 did not go well for him with a career-high 4.56 ERA, 7.9 hits per nine and a career-low 8.8 strikeouts per nine. This Twins lineup has never gotten a hit off Javier, but it was only in 11 at-bats.

It is a pivotal game, as the winner gets to play a series clincher the next day. This is a perfect game to have Gray on the mound, going against a team he’s performed well against.

Bet: Twins Moneyline (-135)

Nashville Predators @ Tampa Bay Lightning

The season gets underway with a cross-conference showdown between the Predators and Lightning. Nashville missed the playoffs last year by three points, while Tampa saw a first-round exit against Toronto (4-2). This matchup is slated for 5:30 p.m. ET from Amalie Arena in Tampa Bay, Fla.

There’s a glaring hole in the Bolts’ lineup to start the season, and that’s goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy. The two-time champion is expected to miss at least the first 8-10 weeks after undergoing back surgery in September. He’ll be replaced by Jonas Johansson in net, who has just 27 career starts under his belt. Over 35 total games played, the 28-year-old owns a 3.35 GAA and .886 SV%.

On the flip side, we have a bonafide star in Juuse Saros getting the nod between the pipes. The Finnish netminder is coming off of a year where he posted a 2.69 GAA (17th) and .919 SV% (sixth). The goaltending edge clearly favors the Preds, so I’ll ride with them as slight underdogs. They have plenty of talent up front, as well, with Filip Forsberg and Ryan O’Reilly, along with up-and-comers Cody Glass and Thomas Novak. Ultimately, considering the mismatch in the crease, I can’t pass up a +135 payout with the Predators.

Bet: Nashville Predators Moneyline (+135)
