Venezuela vs. Mexico

Venezuela posted the 2-1 win over Ecuador in the opening match. That was a giant three points in its quest to advance out of the group stage. Its best showing was in the 2011 installment of this tournament, with a loss in the third-place game. It has advanced to the quarterfinals twice since then, and it was unable to do much of anything, picking up two draws and two losses for last place in the North Zone of Copa America Group B in an event played behind closed doors in Brazil due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, Mexico outlasted Jamaica 1-0, while taking 20 shot attempts, including nine on target. It is tied with Venezuela with three points in Group B play, but La Vinotinto holds the tiebreaker with a plus-2 goal differential. Of course, there is a lot of soccer to be played, and the result of this game will potentially shake things up dramatically.

Mexico does have an injury concern, as captain Edson Alvarez suffered an apparent strained hamstring against Jamaica, so he is a bit of a question mark. Gerardo Arteaga is healthy, and he provided the goal to lift El Tri over Jamaica in the first match.

Venezuela is shooting for its first consecutive wins at Copa America since 2016, but they likely don’t have the offensive punch to get the job done. Remember, the two goals it had against Ecuador came in the second half, well after Ecuador lost its captain early in the game, forcing it to play a man down for over 70 minutes. The defense is suffocating for Venezuela, however, and it’s likely we have another low-scoring affair. A scoreless draw wouldn’t be shocking, but it’s more likely Mexico will get another 1-0 win, punching its ticket to the knockout stages in the process.

Mexico has been looking for a clean sheet in consecutive matches in the group stage since 2001. These sides have met 20 times, with Mexico picking up 14 victories and four draws. Venezuela has just the two wins all-time across all competitions against Mexico.
