It’s homecoming week for Rory McIlroy at the British Open.
Well, not exactly. McIlroy is a native of Northern Ireland and currently resides in Jupiter, Florida. This year's British Open (or "Open Championship," if you're a purist) is being held at Royal Liverpool (aka "Hoylake") in Wirral, England.
But McIlroy hoisted the Claret Jug the last time the Open was held at Royal Liverpool, besting Rickie Fowler and Sergio Garcia by two shots in 2014, and he returns nine years later as the betting favorite.
Who could have imagined that Rory would go nine years without winning a major? He won both the Open and the PGA Championship in 2014 — his third and fourth major championships. He was only 25 at the time.
Can Rory end the majors drought at a course where he's tasted victory before? It won't be easy, as world No. 1-ranked player Scottie Scheffler, 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm and 2023 PGA champ Brooks Koepka all have designs on the Jug.
Fans of true links golf and the creative shotmaking it requires should be excited about the Open Championship's return to Hoylake. The course will be firm and fast, and we'll see a lot of players landing their approach shots in front of the green and bouncing the ball onto the putting surface.
McIlroy posted a winning score of -17 in 2014. Tiger Woods finished at -18 when he won the Open at Hoylake in 2006. But if the wind howls, we could easily see a winning score in the neighborhood of -7 or -8.

Since Viktor Hovland burst onto the golf scene as the low amateur in the year Tiger made his historic Masters comeback victory, he has developed into one of the world’s best golfers. Since his name is routinely at the top of leaderboards, people forget that he is just 25 years old and yet to hit his peak, but he is certainly starting to hit his stride. It is only a matter of time before Hovland starts winning majors, evidenced by his runner-up performance at this year’s PGA Championship. In fact, he has finished inside the T20 in each of his past four major championship appearances.

I personally am not playing Hovland this week, but 20/1 is a tremendous number. I think there is just better value in the middle of the board in a week that is surely to be unpredictable due to the swirling winds on the seaside links course, but if you want to play one of the favorites, I think there is far more value in this number than there is in Rory at 13/2 or Scheffler at 7/1.
