MLB Best Bets

Texas Rangers (+100vs. Kansas City Royals (-118) | O/U 9 (-110/-110)

In one of the fishier MLB lines available today, the Royals are favorites over the Rangers despite them sending southpaw Martin Perez to the mound, while their own starter has allowed 13 earned runs in his last 11 innings. However, that is the faith oddsmakers have in Brady Singer to bounce back against a Rangers team that is 9-2 when allowing four or fewer runs this season.

Perez has seen his strikeout total lessen in three consecutive starts after a seven-strikeout performance in his first start. However, Perez’s last two starts have come against teams (the Cubs and Astros) that rank in the top 12 in strikeout rate, with Houston specifically striking out the least of any team against left-handed pitching. Perez’s strikeout total should be on the rise today when facing a Royals lineup that is the worst in baseball with a 32% strikeout rate and .250 on-base percentage against southpaws.

Conversely, Singer had allowed one or fewer earned runs in six of his previous seven home starts before getting roughed up by Atlanta (eight earned runs in five innings) in his last start.

The Under is 40-18-7 in the last 65 meetings between these teams and is 20-8-2 in the previous 30 in Kansas City. Thus, we expect another low-scoring battle between two promising pitchers.

Pick: Rangers-Royals Under 9 (-110)

NBA Playoffs Best Bets

Los Angeles Lakers vs. Memphis Grizzlies

The Los Angeles Lakers stunned the Memphis Grizzlies in Game 1. Anthony Davis had 22, and LeBron James had 21. Those two weren’t even the leading scorers for the Lakers on Sunday. Instead, it was Rui Hachimura and Austin Reaves stealing the show.

It’s clear now. The Lakers do have depth. They have players who can step up, and Davis and James have helped this team develop throughout the season.

Coming into tonight, Ja Morant is questionable. I’d assume he’ll play, but it’s more of a pain tolerance thing. Memphis has shot an effective field goal percentage of 54.4%, the 19th-best in the league. Yet, they’re not getting to the foul line often. On defense, the Grizzlies have allowed 27.4% of offensive rebounds. That’s an area they’ve struggled with all year.

The Lakers earned 11 more rebounds and shot over 53% from the field while hitting 43.2% from deep. Memphis is typically very good defensively, but the Lakers might have too many weapons. If Reaves and Hachimura continue to bury shots, the Lakers are dangerous.

I’ll back the Lakers on the road in Game 2.

Bet: Lakers (-115)

NHL Playoffs Best Bets

New York Islanders (+150) vs. Carolina Hurricanes (-175) | O/U 5.5 (+120/-140)

The Hurricanes took care of business in their opening matchup, beating the Islanders 2-1 on home ice. The Eastern Conference foes are back at it tonight at 7:00 p.m. ET from PNC Arena in Raleigh, NC.

Well, it appears that the bookmakers have already caught on as they’re juicing the under in the Isles vs. Canes game heavily. While it’s a steep price to pay for a total, I’m still riding with the under here. Both of these teams earn their paychecks by excelling defensively. Carolina ended the regular season second in overall defense (2.40 GAA), while New York was right behind them in third (2.44 GAA).

Furthermore, the cat’s out of the bag regarding the fact that the only chance New York has in this series is if Ilya Sorokin completely stands on his head. He’s been the backbone of this team all 2023, finishing the regular campaign at 31-22-7 with a 2.34 GAA and .924 SV%. The Russian-born netminder was fantastic in the opener, stopping 35 out of 37 shots attempts.

Factor in that the Isles owned the third-worst power play unit in the league this year (15.8%) and are currently 0-12 against the Canes in five games, and we shouldn’t see many goals in this one.

Bet: Under 5.5 Goals (-140)
