NFL Best Bets

Houston Texans @ Indianapolis Colts

This is a classic win and you’re in/loser leaves town matchup. As a bonus, it’s between division rivals. Expectations for both of these teams coming in to the season were pretty low. Now one of them will make the playoffs.

Both of these teams went into the season with new first-time head coaches. Shane Steichen and DeMeco Ryans are both top-five in current Coach of the Year odds. Each of these teams also started a rookie quarterback that they drafted with a top-four pick. Both looked really good this year, but unfortunately, the Colts’ lost Anthony Richardson for the season in Week 5.

The Texans got to enjoy C.J. Stroud for a lot more. He has also missed some time due to injury but returned in Week 17 with a strong performance against another division rival, the Tennessee Titans. I like the Texans plus the points this week with a healthy Stroud in Indianapolis.

Bet: Houston Texans +1.5 (-118)

NBA Best Bets

Miami Heat @ Los Angeles Lakers

The Miami Heat have already ruled out Jimmy Butler for tonight’s game. Meanwhile, Rui Hachimura won’t play for the Lakers. Ultimately, the Lakers have four questionable players, including LeBron James, who is dealing with an illness.

Neither team is consistent offensively this year. The Lakers have scored 114.6 points per 100 possessions and have earned just 23.2% of offensive rebounds. The second chances will be limited against Miami, and the foul shots won’t come around very often.

Meanwhile, the Heat have scored 115.7 points per 100 possessions and earned a low offensive rebounding percentage of 25.9%.

The Heat are better at getting to the foul line, but the Lakers have given up a free throw rate of 16.8 defensively, which is the second-best in the NBA.

With so many injuries and illnesses, I’ll happily take the Under 227.5 in this one.

Bet: Under 227.5 (-110)

College Basketball Best Bets

#16 Clemson @ Miami

For two teams who have gone in opposite directions since the start of the College Basketball season, we have a near pick-em tonight with slight juice towards Clemson. The Tigers have impressed offensively, while the Hurricanes haven’t been the most efficient squad without a really very win on their resumé yet.

For me, it’s a clear under play here. Clemson’s offense runs through its perimeter shooting with the 11th-best shooting squad from deep, and over 35% of their points come from long range. Despite Miami’s 123rd-defensive efficiency ranking, they do excel at three-point defense, limiting teams to 26.4% from deep, the sixth-lowest rate in the country. The Hurricanes are disciplined at not fouling, so there should be very little coming from the charity stripe tonight for Clemson as well.

Miami excels offensively, but Clemson boasts an all-around game and does not allow many second-chance looks with an advantage on the defensive glass. Both teams would have to be elite at shooting from everywhere on the court. Given the Tigers’ historical road woes, I’m expecting a down game from them in the shooting department. Still, they are a better team, so while I can’t take Clemson outright, the under is a pretty straightforward play to me here.

Play: Under 155.5 (-110)
