Bijan Robinson To Win Offensive Rookie of the Year (+500)

Hot starts from other rookies like C.J. Stroud and Puka Nacua have created some value for Robinson, whose number at BetMGM is actually longer than it was at the beginning of the season.

While Stroud has had an incredible start to his career, setting the NFL record for consecutive passes without throwing an interception as a rookie, I think he’ll have an increasingly more difficult time as teams gather more film on him in this Texans offense. We started to see that in his most recent game at Atlanta.

Nacua also got off to a blazing start, setting another NFL record for receptions within a player’s first three games, but we just saw Cooper Kupp garner a team-high 12 targets, eight receptions and 118 yards in his return from the IR.

Meanwhile, Robinson has worked to become the lead back for the Falcons, out-touching the incumbent Tyler Allgeier in three of the past four weeks. He already has two 100-yard rushing games to his name, and he’s caught at least four passes in all but one of Atlanta’s games. His workload will only increase over the course of the season, making him even more of a catalyst in this Atlanta offense that runs the ball at a top-10 rate. He has helped to raise both the floor and the ceiling of this Falcons team that figures to be in contention for the NFC South and an NFC playoff spot at the end of the season.

It also doesn’t hurt that Robinson is the embodiment of a human joystick, with his insane juke moves and one-handed catches going viral on social media. I think this is a great price to buy the preseason OROY favorite, as his production figures only to go up over the course of the season, while others like Stroud and Nacua will almost certainly regress as the season matures.

Wyoming Cowboys @ Air Force Falcons

We need to talk about Wyoming. The Cowboys got off to a great start with big wins over Texas Tech and Fresno State. However, both of these came at home in Laramie at night. Going on the road has been a different story. The Cowboys only have one road game on the resumé so far, and it was a loss at Texas 31-10. Still, the final score doesn’t tell the whole story. Wyoming entered the fourth quarter tied 10-10, outgaining the Longhorns 235-175. Things fell apart late, but they were right in it.

Air Force will present its own challenges to this Wyoming team. The Falcons have managed to move the ball quite well all season, although their schedule leaves a bit to be desired. Per SP+ rankings, this will be the toughest matchup the Falcons offense has played all year. The closest comparison is a Sam Houston State defense that held Air Force to just 258 yards of total offense, even though they dominated the time of possession battle. The Bearkats held Air Force to a season-low 13 points.

This is a really well-coached Wyoming team, and that type of discipline is critical to beating a service academy. Both of these teams are dark horses to earn the Group of 5 NY6 Bowl invite. A win by either program will be huge in meeting that goal. With a win by the Cowboys, coupled with wins over Fresno and Texas Tech, this could be a springboard for a really special season in Laramie.

Bet: Wyoming Moneyline (+300)

Houston Astros @ Minnesota Twins

An opponent rarely has a pitching advantage over the Houston Astros, but the Minnesota Twins do today and are rightful favorites because of it. Twins righty Joe Ryan ranks in the 88th percentile in strikeout rate and chase percentage. He also ranks in the 92nd percentile in walk rate. In addition, Ryan’s xERA of 3.53 is nearly a full run lower than his actual 4.51 ERA, which suggests he pitched better than the numbers give him credit for.

Meanwhile, Jose Urquidy pitched to a 5.29 ERA this season and has an even worse 6.18 playoff ERA since 2017. And while Houston used Hunter Brown for an inning of relief yesterday, that means J.P. France is likely to take much of the bulk innings if Urquidy runs into trouble. That is a good sign for Minnesota, as France was lit up for an ERA north of 7.00 in his final seven regular season starts and allowed a .286 OBA after the All-Star Break.

Minnesota used mostly starters (Kenta Maeda and Bailey Ober) in relief in Game 3, which means their middle relievers, who ranked in the top seven in BABIP, are well-rested for this matchup. Houston was an impressive 23-12 as road underdogs this season, but Minnesota won 61.1% of its games (44 of 72) as home favorites. We expect the Twins to force a Game 5.

Pick: Twins Moneyline (-126)

Montreal Canadiens (+230) vs. Toronto Maple Leafs (-286) | 6.5 (-124/+102)

The Canadiens feel so far removed from their 2021 Stanley Cup runner-up season. Montreal has finished in the cellar of the Atlantic the last two seasons, posting point totals of 55 and 68, most recently. They’ll make the short trip to Ontario to take on the Leafs in tonight’s opener. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET from Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.

Like every season, the vibes are high entering the year for the Maple Leafs. The oddsmakers are buying the hype, giving Toronto the second-shortest odds to win the Cup at +900, tied with New Jersey.

This is the perfect storm to fade the Habs, and I’ll lay the 1.5 goals with coin-flip odds. It’s already confirmed that Jake Allen will get the nod between the pipes for Montreal, and he’s coming off of a year where he went 15-24-3 with a 3.55 GAA (46th) and .891 SV (45th). That won’t bode well against a Toronto side that was 10th in shooting percentage (10.6%) and ninth in goals per 60 minutes (3.36 G/60). The Leafs return a myriad of offensive talent in Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, John Tavares and William Nylander, while also adding Tyler Bertuzzi and Max Domi to assist up front. Toronto should be a powerhouse this season, and I expect them to take care of business in the opener. Give me the Maple Leafs -1.5.

Bet: Toronto Maple Leafs -1.5 (-110)
